In a nation as vibrant and diverse as Uganda, literacy is more than just a skill—it is a cornerstone of progress, empowerment, and social development. The ability to read and write is the key that unlocks countless doors, from accessing education and employment to participating fully in community life. However, for many of our fellow Ugandans, particularly in underserved regions, access to books and quality reading resources remains a significant challenge. That is why we are proud to launch the Uganda Reads! Literacy Drive, a nationwide campaign dedicated to fostering a love for reading and improving literacy rates for all.
Our campaign is built on three core pillars designed to make a tangible impact:
- Book Donations and Distribution: We are collecting new and gently used books of all genres and for all ages. We need everything from colorful children's storybooks to textbooks for secondary school students and engaging novels for adults. These books will be distributed to a network of local schools, community libraries, and youth centers, helping to create vibrant new learning spaces where they are needed most. We are establishing easy-to-access drop-off points in urban centers and working with local community leaders to ensure books reach rural areas. Every book you donate is a new world waiting to be explored by a child, a student, or an elder.
- Reading Mentorship Program: Reading is a journey best taken with a guide. Our mentorship program will connect dedicated volunteers with young learners who need personalized encouragement and support. Our mentors will work with children to build their confidence, improve their reading comprehension, and discover the joy of getting lost in a good story. We are looking for individuals who can commit to spending a few hours a week reading with a child. We will provide training and resources to all our volunteers to ensure they are well-equipped to make a lasting difference in a young person's life.
- Community Storytelling Events: To celebrate the power of narrative and connect with Uganda's rich oral traditions, we will be organizing a series of community storytelling events. These gatherings will bring people together to share tales from our heritage, learn from local authors, and witness the magic of a story being told aloud. These free events will take place in various communities, serving as a powerful reminder that reading is not just a solitary activity, but a shared experience that strengthens our bonds as a community.
We are calling on all Ugandans to join this movement. Whether you can donate books, volunteer your time as a mentor, or simply spread the word about our events, your contribution is invaluable. By working together, we can equip our future generations with the tools they need to succeed and ensure that the gift of reading is available to every citizen, from Kampala to the smallest village.
Keep an eye on our page for a list of book collection points and details on how to get involved with our mentorship and storytelling programs. Let's make sure that every Ugandan has the opportunity to unlock their full potential. Join us in making Uganda a nation that reads!
